Behind the Designer: a look into Rêver's creative handcrafted jewelry

Welcome to the second edition of our new segment, where the Editorial team looks deeper into the designers we feature on our website. We’ll be looking into the purpose, passion, and inspiration behind the excellent jewelry pieces we admire.

This time, we’re exploring Rêver further with Rêver’s co-founder, Marta Peñalver Torres. Rêver came about from the overflow of love for art, fashion, and design, alongside a committed desire to celebrate these passions with a balance of scientific innovation and timeless style. The brand hopes to contribute to the earth with its sustainable practices, believing that each jewelry piece is an object of art that connects with emotions and ideas.

Thank you Marta for sharing with us!

“We believe in jewelry as an art form in itself; it connects with emotions and ideas…transcending beyond aesthetics and design.”

What inspired you to start the brand Rêver?

The driving force behind Rêver's creation was the desire to launch a new brand within such a traditional industry. Jewelry, especially in our country - Spain, is very traditional and has been operating in the same way for many years. We knew that the landscape had changed, that there were other ways of doing things, and that we could be the catalysts for this change. We wanted to make a difference.

It was birthed from two entrepreneurs seeing the necessity to bring transparency to the jewelry landscape, an industry in which we had both worked for major firms and had been passionate about for a long time. In 2021, we decided to take the leap and embark on this new adventure.

At Rêver, we believe in jewelry as an art form in itself; it connects with emotions and ideas and should also have a significant impact, transcending beyond aesthetics and design.

So, we decided to create a responsible project that promotes trust in the jewelry industry by offering complete transparency and crafting purposeful jewelry. Therefore, Rêver handcrafts jewelry in Spain using 18-carat recycled gold and lab-grown diamonds.

What were your first steps in starting a sustainable jewelry brand? For example, what did you have to look into to ensure quality and responsible jewelry (materials, process, etc.)?

In our early stages, we took into account several key aspects that were essential to us. Starting with the materials; at Rêver, we always work with responsibly sourced materials to reduce environmental impact and ensure the social rights of all individuals involved. Equally important is where and how each piece is produced.

We consider ourselves fortunate to be able to collaborate with the finest artisans who breathe life into our designs. The production model is also of great importance; to promote responsible consumption and minimize impact, we work with small-scale productions complemented by a Made-to-Order model to avoid overproduction.  Finally, we consider all aspects connected to the brand, such as using sustainable packaging, and shipping with reduced carbon footprint.

How has the region (Spain) you are based in influenced your jewelry making?

In Spain, we are fortunate to have an exquisite jewelry tradition that leads to the creation of pieces that resonate with the spirit and heritage of the country itself.

Our workshop which specializes in the production of high-quality jewelry has kept the essence of the jewelry industry since its creation. Our team of experts mix craftsmanship with new technologies to create our pieces, paying attention to all the details.

Also, the workshop is a member of the Responsible Jewelry Council (RJC); committed to reducing the environmental impact and creating a safer workplace aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

How do you want people to feel when wearing your jewelry?

A piece of jewelry is often linked to commemorating a special moment, whether at a personal level or for someone to whom the jewel is gifted. That is why we believe in a Rêver customer who is empowered, self-confident, and a catalyst for change.

With a minimalist style, they are passionate about fashion, design, and art. They seek purposeful pieces that they can wear every day and allow them to feel good.

What makes Rêver’s jewelry collection stand out?

We offer a wide selection of jewelry that combines reinvented classic pieces with more distinctive designs, all intended to adapt to the various occasions faced by today's women. Whether it be for a dinner with friends, a special event, or a business meeting, our jewelry is designed to complement and enhance any look.

Our philosophy revolves around creating jewelry that transcends fleeting trends and endures over time, with the hope that they become treasures passed down through generations. To us, that would be the ultimate gift.

Name two of your favorite collections from the brand and tell us the story behind them.

It is quite challenging for us to choose among the collections of the brand. However, if we had to select two, these would be the most exceptional ones.

  1. The Marquise’s Lips Collection was one of the collections we introduced at the brand's launch, and it marked the first time we worked with the exceptional Marquise diamond cut - a special cut that adds uniqueness to any look. The collection is inspired by the lips of Madame de Pompadour, one of the most sophisticated marquises of the French court of King Louis XV.
  2. The True Caprice Collection is one of our favorites and includes our Romance earrings, an iconic design of the brand, and it fills us with excitement to see that our clients also appreciate them. They are a unique piece that incorporates the 'v' of Rêver into its design, suitable for both everyday wear and more special occasions.

“We are aware that achieving 100% sustainability is not possible...However humans have always used clothing and accessories to express themselves, so if we can do it in a way that doesn’t compromise the planet and humanity as much, why wouldn't we?”

What dreams do you have regarding how the jewelry landscape will continue to change? How do you feel jewelry plays a role in sustainable change and conscious living?

It is essential to highlight and promote sustainable jewelry, as it is important for consumers to be aware that there is a more sustainable alternative for jewelry production - one that generates less impact. Unfortunately, there are not as many jewelry brands committed to responsible jewelry creation, but it is encouraging to see how increasingly more brands are taking small steps in this direction.

At Rêver, we take pride in following a sustainable model, and our goal is to share it with all consumers, so they can understand that there is another option.

We are aware that achieving 100% sustainability is not possible, as it would entail ceasing production altogether. However, humans have always used clothing and accessories to express themselves, so if we can do it in a way that doesn’t compromise the planet and humanity as much, why wouldn't we?

As founders and consumers, we want to know where and how the products we purchase are made, who is involved in their production, and under what conditions. It is inevitable that brands, including ours, aim to address this need.

It is the natural way for a new brand like ours to emerge in today's world: with a purpose and as an agent of change. We have the perfect materials to minimize impact, an incredible team of experts in Spain who handcraft our jewelry, and a clear purpose in every piece.
